Great article from the superstar Harvard Business School team led by Karim Lakhani on how Generative AI is reshaping cultures and ways of working by lowering the expertise threshold in large organizations! This article is based on a multiple recent studies and both confirms trends we've seen before and reveals hidden patterns that every Leadership team should pay attention to. Here are my key take-aways: Confirmed Trends - Efficiency: Individuals using AI significantly cut down task time and teams matched or exceeded performance vs. control group without AI, especially in cross-functional tasks. - Efficacy: Teams with AI produced top-quality solutions at a higher rate than other groups, showing that human collaboration combined with AI generates increased performance. - Business Integration: AI usage enabled participants to develop solutions outside their expertise, e.g. technical and commercial. AI can help break down silos with broader problem-solving across functions. Hidden patterns - Team dynamics: AI usage reshapes teamwork by flattening hierarchy, especially in knowledge intensive teams as it helps balance contributions from team members with varying degrees of expertise. - Emotional Impact: AI users reported increased positive emotions (excitement, energy) and reduced negative ones (anxiety, frustration). This indicates that AI can significantly enhance the work experience. - Cognitive Dissonance: Despite objectively better performance, AI-assisted participants had lower confidence in their outcomes, revealing a disconnect between reality and perception in AI-augmented work. This is the only clear negative outcome of the study. Potential causes may be culture related, and we should stay ahead with learning and communication: 1. Less effort is tied to lesser outcomes, in spite of precedents such as industrial automation, computing, etc. 2. Work done with AI is (still) felt as "cheating", and therefore taints the experience as a fraud, undermining confidence 3. The outcome feels less personal and relatable. This could be a good thing too if it leads to more fact-based discussions in decision making vs. strong attachment to one's own ideas and preconceptions. As culture influencers and leaders, our focus should be on how we can start shifting the cultural norm regarding AI augmented work. Swiss startup FinalSpark aims to build world’s first living processors for AI computing. Their website currently says they offer “instant access to human neurons” where you can “run your remote biocomputing research from your own desk”. This 24/7 remote access to brain organoids is yours from as little as $500 per month. You may be wondering, why not use machines for AI computing? The reason given on FinalSpark’s website is that the human brain is far more efficient than silicon-based chips. They describe using human brain cells as a platform for artificial intelligence as “the next evolutionary leap for AI”. This suggests to me that the human brain is already quite an optimised machine. Out of pure passion for the art, I've taken on a new challenge for the past few months: teaching a seminar to the first-ever cohort of #AI students at Babes-Bolyai University. Over the course of the last semester, I've had the pleasure of diving deep into the world of Operating Systems with them. However, the six seminars offered ample opportunity to explore beyond this core topic. We ventured into the realm of Generative AI, showcasing my research findings, and even experimented with running models locally. I've been frequently asked about the most relevant Generative AI with LLMs Certification one could aim for. Although this type of question rarely has a definitive answer, my perspective is that NVIDIA clearly stands out in the AI hardware domain and is posed to dominate the landscape for the foreseeable future. Therefore, to be specific, here’s the certification that I believe is most beneficial for those keen on LLMs: NVIDIA's Generative AI with LLMs Certification. 🚀 Exciting morning at the AI Innovators Club event hosted by Microsoft Switzerland at their stunning new offices at The Circle, Zurich Airport. 💡 The event brought together key players in the generative AI space, each delivering powerful 10-minute pitches showcasing their use cases and services. We then engaged in 4 rounds of 30-minute "speed dating" sessions, which allowed for deeper discussions and networking. Microsoft’s ‘black-belt’ experts also led insightful high-level sessions in the main room, setting the stage for the next steps in AI. 🔄 This format has evolved from the AI Breakfast series. Microsoft now clearly recognizes that generative AI isn’t just another tool in the digital toolbox—it’s a game-changing force, set to disrupt and empower industries across the board. Welcome to AI Transformation—with its vast challenges and even greater potential for growth. 🎯 For me, this event was both intimate and impactful. While it was small and comfortably hosted, the significance of the conversations and insights was huge. As one of the world’s most innovative countries, Switzerland is at the forefront of this shift, yet confusion and demand are high. That’s why I gladly took the opportunity to engage with several of the pitching companies—not for competition, but for collaboration, as the possibilities in AI are vast and rapidly evolving. ✨ On a fun note, LinkedIn congratulated me on my new contacts. 📚 Large language models reduce public knowledge sharing on online Q&A platforms 👥 R Maria del Rio-Chanona, Nadzeya Laurentsyeva, Johannes Wachs 📆 September 11, 2024 🌐 #DOI10193: https://lnkd.in/d29iMR-7 Authors of this recently approved article on #PNASnexus looked at a decline in activity on #StackOverflow, a popular programming forum, which coincided with #ChatGPT's release. To see if this drop was unique to ChatGPT, the researchers compared Stack Overflow with similar platforms, like forums in #Russia and #China (where ChatGPT access is limited) and math forums (where ChatGPT is less useful). 💡 Within six months, activity on Stack Overflow dropped by 25%, especially for posts about widely used programming languages. Coincidences? 🤔 It seems, not. 🗣"Thus, LLMs are not only displacing duplicate, low-quality, or beginner-level content. Our findings suggest that the rapid adoption of LLMs reduces the production of public data needed to train them, with significant consequences." 📊 The analysis involved 58 million posts from January 2022 to June 2023, evaluating post frequency, user engagement, and voting patterns with the difference-in-differences (#DiD) method (trends on Stack Overflow before and after ChatGPT’s release in November 2022) but also by extending the study to Russian/Chinese Q&A forums and math-related sites for a cross-check. ✅️ #Findings... ➡️ Within 6 months, posting activity on Stack Overflow decreased by 25% compared to its Russian and Chinese counterparts and math forums; ➡️ Major impact discovered on different programming languages forums especially about #Python and #JavaScript—languages where ChatGPT stands out. Lesser-known languages were less affected, potentially due to the limited training data available for them in LLMs; ➡️ The drop in activity was observed across all #experience levels, from newbies to experienced and expert users, but the level of involvement and, of course, the scope are unclear; ➡️ The #quality of posts, measured by peer feedback (upvotes/downvotes), did not significantly change post-ChatGPT but in my opinion it is not a trustable KPI as feedback are mostly related the effectiveness of the answer not the style/form. Frequently, people also forget or avoid to provide feedback... 💡I see a long list of #SideEffects, of course at different impact level, but surely part of the game. Let's look at the main categories and classes: 🟥 Decrease in the users engagement; 🟥 A decline of the forum and community usage / traffic; 🟥 A homogenization of knowledge with a curve flattened for the originality of the answers... and knowledge; 🟥 The interactive problem solving for the interaction reply by reply... gone; 🟥 Frequently forums and communities are also good for identifying talents or remarkable Professionists / Enthusiasts: no posts, no visibility. 🟥 Information as silos, a classic of chatbots with zero lateral thinking. Is Germany losing the AI race? 🚆 The below chart shows an exciting shift in the geographical distribution of the leading AI researchers recognised at NeurIPS, one of the most prestigious conferences. While the US continues to make up the majority, its share fell from 65% in 2019 to 57% in 2022. At the same time, countries such as China (12%) and Germany (4%) have gained in importance, albeit to very different degrees. What does this mean for Germany?🇩🇪 With only 4% of the world's leading AI researchers, the question arises: Why is this? Germany undoubtedly has excellent research institutions and a strong industrial base. Nevertheless, there are challenges, such as Research funding: is there enough investment in AI research to keep up with global competition? Talent promotion: Is Germany attracting enough top international researchers or are they migrating to countries with better conditions? Innovation culture: Do we have the right innovation culture that favours ground-breaking research?
